On the site where Father Leon of Avanchers built the first church here in 1851, the majestic cathedral with elaborate woodwork and beautiful tapestries was created. The cathedral, which is dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, also houses the burial of Felix Paul, the first Seychellois Bishop, who died on November 21, 2001. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, also known as Victoria Cathedral, was one of the first churches established in Seychelles. This lovely structure, near the Clock Tower on Olivier Maradan Street in Victoria, is close to the city center. It is Seychelles’ largest Catholic church, and it is elegant and designed in the French style. Victoria’s residents spend quiet hours in worship here. Visitors go to witness the wonders of the magnificent structure and its gardens.
The Mother Church of the Catholic Diocese of Seychelles is this majestic Cathedral. The Cathedral is one of the first churches in Seychelles, having been established on the location where Father Leon of Avanchers built the first vault dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception in March 1851.
Felix Paul, the first and only Seychellois Bishop, died on November 21, 2001, and is buried in a tomb constructed into the cathedral’s floor. Although the tomb is hidden, its location is identified by a specific plaque.
La Domus is a two-story priest home erected in 1834 near to the cathedral. The house is distinguished by its magnificent granite exterior. The gardens that surround the church are breathtaking. The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception can accommodate 700 people, making it ideal for both locals and visitors.
Over the years, the Cathedral has undergone several restorations. Except for the outside walls, it was fully restored in 1993-94. Egbert Marday, a Seychellois sculptor, fashioned the tabernacle and the carved doors during the latest remodeling in 1995.

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is also a public holiday in Panama, which celebrates Mother’s Day with a public holiday. On December 8th, Guam has a public holiday to honor a statue of Mary.
